The Saturday morning post-coffee browse of book reviews at Semicolon is becoming a weekly ritual. Most weeks I come away with a book or two (or more!) that I add to my ever-growing list of books I’d like to read.
Which makes it easier to join in the Saturday Review Challenge. There are already so many books I’ve been wanting to read that other people have reviewed in the past year so picking six was far too easy. The challenge rules are: read six of the books that have been linked to reviews at the Saturday Review of Books in the past year. Read the books by December 31, 2007, review them, and leave a link at the Saturday Review of Books.
Here’s my list:
- Arlington Park by Rachel Cusk
- White Teeth by Zadie Smith
- The Echomaker by Richard Powers
- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
- Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon

I’d be interested to hear what you think about White Teeth. It’s one of those books that I’ve had lying around for a while but haven’t been inclined to pick it up … yet.

I will be very interested to know what you make of the Rachel Cusk as I really do not like her writing style (don’t worry – I’m hoping you’ll rehabilitate her for me!). The Madeleine l’Engle I enjoyed very much, and I also liked Zadie Smith’s On Beauty when lots of people didn’t, so would also be keen to know your thoughts on White Teeth. Great list!

Stephen – I’ve been meaning to read Zadie Smith for a while and so I’m looking forward to it.
Litlove – That’s interesting what you say about Cusk’s writing style. I read The Lucky Ones earlier this year and really enjoyed her writing – I found it rich and unique and in many ways made me think of Woolf. But I did find her theme rather disheartening so we’ll see what I make of Arlington Park. And I can’t wait to reread A Wrinkle in Time, this was one of my all-time favorite books as a child.
